Work on your energy systems to win at the weekend

A smart man once taught me that our body has three ways to produce and utilise energy and all three need to be trained so you can perform at best in your sports, especially team sports where you are switching between walking, jogging, running, sprinting at random.

I won’t bore you with the science (unless you ask nicely) but once you start an activity each energy system kicks in at different points in time.

Put simply:

ATP CP system Provides energy through the first 0-10 seconds of activity

Anaerobic lactate system Provides energy between 10-90 seconds of activity

Aerobic system Provides energy between 90secs to 3hrs

So in your gym training your focus should shift every few weeks from training like a 100m sprinter, to training like a 400m runner to training like an 800m+ runner.

And you don’t have to run if you don’t want to. The rower, ski erg, battle ropes, stationary bike etc will do just fine to train each system.

Give me a shout if you want know how to apply this to your training.
